To get into WPJA, you have to be 100% dedicated to that particular style of photography. I don't know if you've seen the criteria for being a member, but it is very strict. You cannot have ANYTHING other than wedding photography on your website, and more than 80% of your portfolio has to be real-deal candid photography; it can NOT be posed portraits, detail shots, etc. I think they go so far as to say that people can't be looking at the camera in most of the photos. So like I said, you REALLY gotta be commited to the photojournalism style. You can't just say "I like to photograph weddings in a relaxed way" and expect to get in.

And for the most part, the caliber of work is pretty high. But most people can get in if they have a well-defined, consistent style that as good or better than whatever you can find on the WPJA website.

I know a couple friends who are in WPJA, here:

It does seem that once you've been a member for a while, and have established yourself as a successful business, they don't exactly go checking your website 24-7 to make sure you keep up with their requirements, so a lot of people squeeze in some posed work and detail shots even in their front pages. *shrug*

Anyways, good luck! It's not the right thing for me, but I do know that people get tons of business by being members...

I just read the requirements yesterday and perhaps its changed since you last researched it.. but they do allow some bending room for other styles of photography... but it states that no more than 30% of details, contrived posing, flowers.. blah blah blah... are allowed to be displayed on your site. It doesn't say anything about not allowing for other specialties... such as child or family portraiture. I've researched quite a few websites off of the WPJA site and most of them have other specialties of photography... but your right the primary focus is on pure photojournalistic photography...primarily weddings. Thank you for your imput by the way :)
