I don't think I get AE Lock
With reference to the 40D...
Eg, I have a bright sky behind the subject, say, a street scene. What I have been doing: I aim the focus point at the sky, half-depress the shutter, keep it there while I press the AE-Lock button, release the shutter and refocus on the subject while still depressing the AE-Lock button, take photo.
Result, rampant blinkies in the sky!! And do I really need all that Houdini stuff with the fingers??!!
Related: does AE-Lock work in M mode? (It doesn't seem to work any-which-way in the current circumstances :scratch )
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the speed. But... it's a tiny bit cryptic... or more simple than I expected!
To say it my way: in Av mode (only?), put the focus point on the sky, press the AE-Lock button, release, put the focus point on the subject and fire away.
But... the manual talks about half-cocking the shutter, and holding things down, and ... that''s why I'm confused.
