I won't be stamping these on my images... as smugmug is FANTASTIC about securing the photo in other ways... but I wanted some branding... for business cards, my website... etc. etc. Im not good with design... what do you think of this??

Any suggestions?? Anyone want to take a stab at creating a better logo??

I think it's really nice. I'd like to design a logo too, but I'm not sure how. How did you get your hand-written initials in there?

    Hi Rebekah,

I like the logo. In my opinion, it is a little bit confusing where your initials and name overlap. I believe there are two issues, which can easily be fixed.

    1) I think simply changing the color of the initials would help. A light gold color would look really rich on top of that blue and/or black, plus I think it would provide enough contrast to make it more readable.

    2) Some of the lines where the two elements touch create somewhat awkward tangents. (visually, the lines intersect in a strange way that make the eye confused about where one shape begins and another ends) Simply scaling up/down and/or moving up/down would fix this.

Like I said though, I really like it. Just trying to be extra picky so you can make it better. Best wishes,

Better. Hope you don't mind me monkeying with your photo. I was thinking more along these lines: (I'll delete your your pic off my webspace in a day or two. I didn't realize you had to link files, until I tried to upload it)

Another really picky crit would be the roughness of the "R" initial on the top right. Bugs me a little. -I'm an art director btw, so it's my job to give people a hard time. ;)

The original logo was quite striking actually, and Rob's version is even better. Nice job collaborating. ;)

I think a nice additional touch would be to have the initialized G loop through the hole in the gonzalez "g". No repositioning of any element necessary, just have that tail start from behind as it does now, but then have it shoot through the hole in the "g". Because these are fonts, it would likely require pixel level editing to make it happen, but seems like it would add a harmonious touch to the two elements, and add just a bit of dimension.

IMHO, I don't like the logo. I have designed a few logos in my time and have learnt a lot of things from the "design" world.

The G doesn't really appeal to me. One of things you want to make sure is: Can the logo stand by on its own and be identifiable? In your case, without your name, the G can be construed differently.

EDIT: Check this link out for some cool ideas....Logos

    Just my 2 cents.

I have a friend who is a graphics designer and he doesn't like it either.. but Im not great at designing at all... so this is what I've been working with. Im really up for anymore monkeying around with the logo... some of the examples that you showed me were fantastic... I like incorporating an icon "preferably earthy/modern types588401540_CEU8J-X3.jpg"

... I should really do what another member here did and put in a contest for $$$ prize to the winner who creates the best logo. I suck at this :)

BTW this is what I have up on my site now.

IMHO: your initials look great except for the fact that I am not sure if what I see after the "R" is 2 more intials or 1 very large fancy"E"........if it is 3 intials you might want to cut it down to just 1st and last....."RG"

1 other thing bothers me.......is your name Rebekah Gonzales or is Gonzales a partner.....why do I ask???.....all has to due with the colon { : } in you logo.....that can be misconstrued as Rebekah and Gonzales.......

All in all I like the design and have liked all of the designs from the start actually.....but I have had the same questions running thru my head from the start......

Why don't you ask your graphic designer friend to help you out??? Pay him/her a few bucks and see what happens.

If you are thinking about a contest, make sure it is not something like what dgrin did....do actually pick a winner even if you are not happy with the logo. It does take time & effort to do somethings.

Secondly, don't do what dgrin did in keeping the theme open. Be specific on what you like, what you would love and what can't be there at all.

great imput! My friend is very expensive :)... doesn't work for free. My middle initial is E so it does kind of work.. plus i don't think it matters if the initials are legible concidering that its the personal side of the logo. I hear you about the colon...

Are you recommending that I don't do a contest here? I agree... its a photo site not a design site... But do you think there will be a problem asking dgrin members to participate? Anyway, thanks again for all the great advice!!

No, that is not what I am saying. In March this year, dgrin themselves did a logo contest deal. they kept the theme very wide open and saw entries that were very varid.

The prize was $500 B&H card. Only in the end, they didn't pick anyone and in fact took waaaaay too long to even let us know that.

Two failures there....open theme which can lead to a wide variety, but also may not be appealing. That is why I say be as specific as you can...colors you don't like..you like and so on.

The other failure, imho besides lack of communications, was not to declare a winner even they didn't like any logos. As I said, and as your friend is correct (in pricing), designing consumes a lot of time and effort...

Its kind of like someone setting up a contest to take pictures and then saying...we didn't like any, but thanx for your ideas!!!!

So make sure you have a smaller prize for a logo that was best of the worst.
