Getting Started in Weddings

Hi Everyone -

This was posted in Wide Angle, but no responses so I'll try here:

I've been working with weddings & events for years as a DJ, Videographer, and designer... Finally I got to the financial point where I could invest in my photographic passion and I'm building a decent collection of professional gear and some event experience. Now the big question - how do I get started with wedding photography?

As professional photographers in the wedding biz, how do you choose a second shooter? What are some typical arrangements you would make with that person from a business standpoint? Do you allow the second shooter to use images from your events in their portfolio? And how do I, as an aspiring professional, find the pro that is willing to take someone under their wing?

Clearly, this is a relationship of trust: The photographer must trust me to represent him or her in a professional manner, trust my honesty and integrity, and trust that I will get the job done for them. Meanwhile, I must trust the photographer to treat me fairly as I gain knowledge from them.

Any input you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Ken

    a couple of thoughts.....
see if there are any local photo clubs that do get- together.
start networking at the photo club. seek out the wedding guy and gals....

Check forums to find other shooters that require a 2nd (paid) or a tag-a-long/assistant (usually non paid) in your area.

Are there friends/family getting hitched soon that see your work and want you to shoot .... this is how a lot of shooters start.

you are doing the DJ thing .... start conversation w/ the photogs.

I am going to start looking for 2nd shooters and assistants in the photo classes at high schools and local colleges....not just the elective student but those that the teacher says is wanting a career out of it.......no time to learn like when you are young and in school and in return for low wages a techer or prof might give credit for the work done for the photog since it is inline with their course.

Thanks for the input guys - I haven't been doing the DJ thing where I am living now unfortunately but I have been doing some networking. As a followup, any insight on what I should be looking for from a business arrangement?

For example - is it safe to assume I will be able to use my shots in my portfolio? Should I expect to be paid, even though I am willing to do it free at this point.

    I appreciate your responses!

It's all about communication - Most photographers at least from my experience allowed me to use the shots I took for my portfolio some paid some didn't but that came with learning the job. Just talk to whoever you are going to walk it out with most experience photographers know that you need shots for your portfolio.

    Good luck and have fun!wings.gif
