I was wondering if any of you advertise on "The Knott"? and if so have you had success with it? I am considering advertising there but the costs are a bit steep so I want to see if its worth it.

I know 3 people who have tried it. None felt it was worth the money.

I have no personal experience however.

(ps. I have a personal inclination against the knot ever since they came out with their article on how to make good copies of your professional photographers proofs and "Save Money!!!")

I haven't done the knott, but I do advertise in the Alaska Bride and Groom magazine with fabulous results. I would say that I get 50% of my clientelle from that one source. We just had a new edition come out 2 days ago, and I already have my phone ringing off the wall. (Of course I did make it into several special sections highlighting my photos, so that could have something to do with it.) Brides come to consultations with dog eared and circled copy... little tabs on the pages they like. It is crazy. It might just be the market up here, but it works for me.

    Maybe try a local magazine?

Im not sure what the knot specifically charges for there print advertisement... but I know they are a large publication...which means $$$. My expierence with large magazine advertising is that its pretty much useless unless you can invest in at least 5-6 consecutive ads. I did not do this with my photography business yet... but with my baby carrier business...I invested in pregnancy magazine with a PR co-op. And I didn't start seeing a return until the 4th or 5th ad. It seems that you need to be in someones face atleast that many times for it is to sink in. A smaller local magazine will yeild more results faster and for less $$. Just my opinion. I wont ever invest in a large magazine again... unless its a killer deal for me.. or I have money to throw away.

Oh.. typical fees for a largly circulated magazine usually look like this on average.

.25 page ad = $1400-$5000 for one month (one issue)
    .50 page ad = $2,000-$8000 (one issue)

you get the point...its pretty pricy. But if you are really interested (and money is an issue) they usually have last minute discounted spots called remnants. (spots that aren't filled at the last minute can go for as much as 60% off.) contact the advertising person...can usually be found online pretty easily and ask.

Nah. Not worth the money. Not sue if you're looking into internet or magazine advertisement ... but let's face it, you'll end up spending thousands of dollars, and you'll end up on page 15 ... without a photo / only link ... ne_nau.gif

I was looking at advertising on their web sites. They have 3 or 4 that when you advertise with them they list you on. The package I was looking at was $150 a month it puts you between pages 2 & 4 with a gallery of 10 photos & a link to the web site, its an extra $300 a month for page 1 (which they are currently sold out on). The main reason I was considering it was that a few Brides I have talked to about planning their weddings say the first place they go is to their web site.

    Not in So Cal
The word on the street in Socal is that the Knot Brides are looking for cheap/discounted photographers, the ROI isn't there for their ads.

One of my accounting clients, a wedding vendor, ran up a bill over $10,000 of advertising with them because they did not bill him and they ran the ad for a long long time. He ended up having to pay it in increments. It was not a pretty site and he didn't get any substancial work - and maybe it was none. He is really good in his field.

I had one photog tell me he got a lot of tire kickers and he is a discount shoot and burn guy, and another who is an overpriced big-business studio suggested it to me as good advertising but she is an evil whitch and I think she would rather I waste money. I have yet to hear anyone say they book a bunch of stuff through them.

Most of the brides on The Knot actually get their vendor info by word of mouth on the local forums. Personally, I don't think the investment is worth it. Get a happy bride and she will be more than happy to spread the word on her local board.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I completely agree that the best advertisement in the world is word of mouth. I think I am going to keep the $150/month in my pocket on this one.
