Here are some different lighthouses. There are 5 coastal lighthouses in North Carolina. I tried to get all 5 but was not able to get the fifth. I ran out of time and the distance was too great.

Bodie Island Lighthouse:

Currituck Beach Lighthouse:

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse:

Ocracoke Lighthouse:

Thanks for looking

My grandfather on my mom's side of the family was a lighthouse keeper in Wedgeport, Nova Scotia Canada before they automated it. As such I really love lighthouse shots, and these are no exception. Very nice Brian, thanks for sharing and well done!

Hey Greaps! I love the Outer Banks. I'll hopefully be going down for the 4th. I guess we're not going to get to do our normal vacation time down there this year :cry

I love the second one of the Bodie Island tower - nice light, really wide. Never made it all the way to Ocracoke (one of these days) - Looks like there's no other way to shoot that one. I always seem to see the same shot you've got here. You did it nicely though - again nice light.

There's a couple issues (that I'm sure you're aware of) on the Currituck and Hatteras pics. The currituck looks pretty dark. Perhaps you could have done a double exposure and stacked (or if you shot in RAW you can develop two exposures from the one RAW image). Either that or maybe go for the total sillouette with the light in the tower.

On the Hatteras - you lost a lot of contrast from the glare. I know you probably wanted to have the walkway in the shot, but you might have gotten a better result from a different angle.

Cool stuff though - I always love lighthouses. Did you climb either the Hatteras or Currituck?

Your right, there are not too many ways to shoot it. here are a couple that are different.... :D

I actually expected it to be a sillouette as it was shot well after sunset and it was pretty dark. I wanted the sillouette with the light properrly exposed. I was suprised to find any detail in the tower at all.

I never made it down to this lighthouse when it was open so I dont know if there are better angles from the grounds.

The lack of contrast is from early morning fog which was just clearing. When I pulled in the parking lot you could not see the lighthouse at all from the lot.

five minutes later I took this...

None of the lighthouses were open to be climbed when I was at them. Bodie Island is being restored inside. I was able to go inside Ocracoke.

    Thx for the comments.

Ah, and my "wrong to right ratio" keeps on growing. rolleyes1.gif Maybe either a polarizer to kill the haze or more fog for a "foggy shot". Just seems kind of in-between to me.

Yup - Bodie's been closed for a while now - haven't yet been in it. I've been up in the Currituck and Hatteras towers. That is kind of a neat experience.

Looks like you at least had a good photo trip. Hope you and the family had a good time overall.

    I love lighthouses too
You were lucky to have such nice weather. Look at the clarity in the air! No salt haze to speak of... These looks so "coastal." Really great colors.
