What you are looking down is 5-6k of glacier and those are crevasses. The lens is obscurring the distances. It's acutally a long way down (several miles). Some of those crevasses are very deep.

This whole area is so amazing you're just guaranteed some great photos. I'd love to make it up to White Pass when all those lillies are in bloom. Might be headed to Lost Creek Ridge & Lake Byrne for my summer backpacking trip..
