Notification of Gallery Updates? Email list?

As my busy (school) season starts up, I'd like to a better job of letting people know that I've uploaded their event photos.
I think I'm going to try two things:
An email list that people can subscribe to, and Twitter-ing (Tweeting) that I've updated a gallery.
Does anyone know of a free or low-cost mailing list service that I could use that could be set up with a custom email address in my custom domain?
Hint: I wish SM would add this service, at the category level.
