Friends and family will only work if they have a Smugmug site and are logged in to their site while viewing you site.

You can turn on originals and that should show the save icon in the photobar.

So if my family member does not have a smugmug site there is no way that they can get a photo?

Just make originals available under customize gallery then anyone can get it.
