When you upload a photo to Smugmug, what determines the pixel size of the variations (small, medium, large) that get created? Is there any way to influence this?

    Hi flyingpylon,

We don't modify your original, so it will always be as you upload it.

Assuming your original is larger than 800 pixels on the longest side, we make 5 display copies:

    Large: up to 800x800
    Medium: up to 600x450
    Small: up to 400x300
    Big thumbnail: up to 150x150
    Small thumbnail: up to 100x100

    Here's the rationale:

The most popular gallery style, and the default if you have a 1024x768 monitor or above, is Elegant. It is designed to fit with no scrolling vertically or horizontally. We quickly found that users are allergic to scrolling. Just a few percentage points less popular is Elegant Small, which is the default if your monitor is 800x600 or below. Again, no scrolling.

Our subcribers tend towards 1024 monitors but they often share with their grandparents who have 800x600. Everyone is happy without anyone having to guess who has what monitor.

If your original is between 800x800 and 600x450, it's used as large an no large display copy is made. Ditto for the other sizes.

    Clear as mud? eek7.gif

    Thanks!
    Baldy

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

I suppose a feature request would be to allow members to specify what size in pixels they would like each size to be. That would probably need to be an "advanced" feature.
