I am definitely a novice when it comes to shooting birds.
Besides AI Servo, I move the focus to the * on the back of my 40D so I can quickly aim, focus with my thumb, and shoot. This is a tip I learned from my local camera club that's greatly improved my shots. I'm probably not sharing anything new to the seasoned "birder," but it sure helped me out!

Bud
Very cool. I'm always amazed at how birder shooters are able to focus so quickly on birds in-flight.
AI Servo AF!
Nice ones!
Now I know that you're old enough to remember Grouch Marx, Bud. Every time I see an osprey I'm reminded of him!
Yes, AI Servo, but it's still not that easy!
Notice the impeccable technique.
Nice That is quite the setup.
Do you use just one focus point?
Yep...that is all that is available on my setup.
