Do you want to control a studio flash or a speed light? The alien bees is stuido flash controller and the pocket wizard is primarily for speed lights. The older style pocket wizards are an industry standard for speed light control. The new pocket wizards for canon are much more convenient but they do have some range issues with 580 speed light.

The other option is radio poppers which are well reviewed.

These are your porsche brands..there are of course honda civic brands which I donst know much about.

I hear that the PW mini and Flex system is amazing! Not going on personal experience.

If you are talking about studio light such as alien bees then check out what the make of the lights offer. They are usually a good system for the system.

Sekonic, Prophoto, Bowens, Norman, & Photogenic are a few companies that offer built in PW receivers. If you have one of them then PocketWizard would be a good choice.

What do you want to spend? That can be a determining factor here.

Min , but will consider $200.00 $400.00 only using it with a single 580 EX II Speed light wanna start trying some new things.. that's why the alien bees look and sound like a great deal?

    Thanks so much

Top of the line, industry standard = PocketWizards. Expect to spend near your max for a set.

Good-Very good = Elinchrom Skyports or Bowens Pulsar slaves. Cheaper than PW, around your mid-range price.

Reported good and cheaper = Gadget Infinity Cactus Trigger. About $40.00. Never used them. Maybe some that have will chime in on the good or the bad.

My personal choice was for the PocketWizards. I shoot sports mainly and needed the compatibility, reliabliability and range.

I have been using the RD616 16 channel RF flash trigger.....these have a working distance of 150' and I have not had a problem with any of mine and been using them for almost 1.5 years.......the above link is for the company I purchased mine from also.

They are inexpensive and will work with spedlights as well as studio flash units.....for you 580EX you will need a hotshoe adapter.........as you can see from this link they have a great range in prics and the cheaper ones will work just fine........

Just popped into this forum. I recently invested in the pocketwizard PX for my 580ex/ex2 flashes. You will be in for $400 for the xmit/rcv pair. These seem to be working very solidly (no missed shots after about 100 triggers -- I've been busy w/ my day job). The main advantage is that you get to keep your E-TTL controls. If you don't want that, and will be running manual, then go with something else [the PXjr keeps slipping on availability]. The cybersyncs from AB seem to get good reviews. Also note, that the EX doesn't have a PC port, so you'll need a little pc2household adapter that looks like a hotshoe with a pc port on it to connect to any of these other syncs. The PW velcros onto the face (rcvr) or top (xmit). No extra wires.
