Will this autofocus with a D40. Not sure that is a major obstacle but have gotten very use to auto focus.

Yes, with these tubes you retain AF and VR.

I used these on a d300 and a d700.

I just bought a set for my D300 and 50mm lens. They work great. Wish I'd waited a bit, this is a great price.
