While standing on my back deck enjoying one of Richmond Virginia's finest tobacco products, a small American Robin Fledgling decided that he no longer liked the comfort of his nest perched high in the tree above my deck.

He came down with a pretty good thud in the pile of wood in the corner of the small yard (yes that is what we Californians call the 4x10 foot piece of land surrounding our homes). After a minute or two he scrambled up on the wood and began calling for his mama.

She made numerous trips back and forth bringing worms and other goodies (as long as I stayed out of sight). After half an hour, I helped him through the fence with some gentle prodding. He managed to fly up into an apple tree behind the house and is sitting on one of the lower branches quite happily. Mama is still bringing him food as I sit here watching.
