I swear if a white bird rolled around in a painter's palette, then the painted bunting would be the one to represent that.

Here are some more, and I think better shots, of the painted buntings I saw down at the Javelina Ranch.

Number one is the winner here...IMO. Maybe a little selective sharpening on the bird's head?

    Very nice capture, Stephen.thumb.gif

Agree with Ric and Mike here. #1 is a real winner. You gotta admit these beat the heck out of a curb for a background. rolleyes1.gifAlthough any shot of a painted bunting would satisfy me. Beautiful bird.

It is in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. It is 300 acres of native Taumalipan scrub brush which is what the settlers found there 100s of years ago before cattle ranchers destroyed most of it for farming and cattle ranching. The birds just flock to these areas. It is located just outside of Mission, Texas.

The link is here. The owners are very nice and are dedicated to native land conservation. The owners also run this contest: Images for Conservation.

Hey Stephen. Thanks for posting the link, it made very interesting reading. ICF seem to be a great organisation. The only shame is that it is only for proffessional photographers (80% income earned from photography). It would be nice to do something similar for amateur photographers too. No doubt it already exists in the USA.

Yes, that is too bad, but it does require much field work. I mean these guys and gals spend several months down there trying to get "the shot." Even if there were an amateur division, it would be practically impossible to get down there to photograph as much as I would need to in order to have a chance to place in the competition. But as far as the exact reasons why there are no amateurs, I really do not know.
