Using SB600 as master with another SB600 as slave?

Ok, so I am new to commander mode and off camera flash and have perhaps a dumb question...
Can I use a mounted SB600 on my D300 to fire another SB600 in commander mode? I can get commander mode to work just fine with the on camera flash, but when I try putting one my SB600s on the hot shoe the off camera SB600 doesn't fire. Is there a setting I am missing?
I did a brief search and couldn't come up with anything. Thanks! Nick

SB600 cannot apparently be used as a 'master' after all. Looks like I need an SB800/900 to do so.
Can anyone confirm?

I believe this is correct. The SB-600 will not act as a master. You must use either the on-camera flash, an SB-800/900, or the SU-800 which is a master only (no flash) that mounts on the camera hot shoe.

If you want to fire the SB600 near the hotshoe, you can use a flash bracket, and fire it remotely.
sorry
It's not what you look at that matters: Its what you see!
