Replace photo problem

I notice that when I replace a photo the link I used to share this photo is the original photo. When I get a new link, I see that the dash number at at the end of the name is incremented by one. Because of this I need to go back to places I've provided a link and change the name.

Is this by design? If so, how can I get the shared link name to not change - this seems to defeat the purpose of being able to Replace a photo.

Here is an example of an original link:

and after replacing the photo (twice):

Also I suppose keeping all these previous versions of a photo wastes a lot of space

I guess I should add that this is the same thing that happens if you make any photo adjustments within Smugmug, like crop.

I see now that the two links I posted above now point to the same photo. Thanks for the clarification.
How long does it usually take or them to sync up? Seems like it took a few hours.

They update the link because if they didn't then browser caching might continue to serve up the old version out of the browser cache, but when a browser fetches the new link, it's guarenteed to get the new version. It's just an issue with browser caching. If someone doesn't have the old one in their version cache, then the old URL will serve up the new image, but if they have visited that page before and the old image is in their browser cache, then their browser might choose to show that. There's nothing Smugmug can do to fix that other than turning off browser caching for the images, but that's a poor performance thing to do for normal browsing.

The end result is that if you want to make sure that even previous viewers get the new image right away, then you do need to update the link so that browser caches don't serve up the old one. If you just want to make sure that new viewers see the new image, then you don't have to change anything as that will already work.
