Close Encounter of the Spider Kind

I almost walked right smack dab into this guy late last night as I went out my sliding glass door to my back porch.
Full Disclosure: This was actually two photos combined using a focus stacking technique for greater DOF.
I always find it a challenge to photograph this type of spider who usually builds his web high up. For this one I had to stand on my tiptoes on a stack of books to get eye level with him (I find Photoshop books work best here since they are usually thicker.) The real trick is handholding the camera and flash with one hand while holding a flashlight on the spider with the other to illuminate him in the dark ... and doing all this without losing my balance. Yessir, using the MP-E Macro takes a true athlete!

Have you thought about getting yourself a headlamp, like this: http://www.rei.com/product/761907. It lets you keep both hands free for your gear.
Oh sure, it starts with headlamps and before you know it you're talkin tripods, ring flashes and focusing rails. Pretty soon, getting macro pics isn't a challenge at all.
Interesting idea though....
