Looking at my StatCounter this morning, showed a visitor that came to some of my images by this search:

http://www.smugmug.com/search/index.mg?searchWords=kids&searchType=Image&SortBy=Recent

Creeps me out that someone was looking across Smugmug for pictures of kids.

(goes and unchecks Hello Smuggers and Hello World; shakes head in disgust)

Just had to share, thanks for allowing me to vent.

It could easily have been a photographer looking for examples of kid photography. It could also have been a mom or dad with a new dslr looking for ideas on how to photograph their kids. deal.gif

Yes could have been. And folks that search Google for 'nude' are doing it for examples of proper posing and lighting technique rolleyes1.gif

Yeah but if its someone searching Smugmug, it's most likely a photographer. I know I've searched Smugmug for that reason. I'm pretty sure I did before doing my first family portrait, and they had kids, so I wouldn't doubt searching for kids. Oh and clicking that link had some pretty good family portraits too ne_nau.gif

But if it does creep you out just pw protect the galleries you don't want people seeing ;-)

So searching Google or searching smugmug?? Either case yes they could both be for the wrong reasons or they could both be for good reasons. Jumping to a negative conclusion and automatically judging the searcher is your own personal issue.

When I shot a lingerie shoot for the first time I did search smugmug as well as Google for 'lingerie'- 'nude'- 'hi key'- 'low key' - and 'glamour'. Guess that makes me a pervert rather than a photographer trying to be prepared for a shoot huh?

Do they have to be mutually exclusive choices?

Well, I am not trying to say this instant is the worst of the web, and I am fully open to, and hoping that this isn't. I only posted as it was a bit of a personal wake up call to manage my family pictures a bit closer.

I don't think you are a pervert, but neither do I think that Smugmug exists only as an island of altruistic, professional photographers, interested only in their art.

I have all the tools I need on my Smugmug page to manage this, and I do, though perhaps I have not utilized Smug Islands and Hello World much before (maybe because the names make it difficult to figure out what the heck they are!)

Ironic thing is, this particular search did not result in any of my kids photos showing on the search string: only a picture of my family tent did, since I mentioned in the description that it is was a " new tent for my wife and kids".

By the way, for my family photos, some I have restricted with password, others I restricted from the earlier mentioned, creepy/professional searches, with Hello World and SmugIslands. So, take a moment to go check your gallery settings.

Yeah I keep all family/friends/kid galleries password protected. Which makes it a pain because I do day camp photos every year and I'd LOVE to tag all the kids so their parents can find them, but with a password tags hide away.

Oh and I found out the hard way first time I used Smugmug.. Imagine tagging every photo only to find out that only you could see the tags afterall! :D
