I bet Lord V will know the answer to this.
At first I thought it might be dead but perhaps whatever it is just shed it's exoskeleton and crawled away and left this behind. In any case, if the martians have landed they are quite small and we don't have anything to wory about.

They are harmless, but very noisy and butt ugly. Look around in the next few weeks and you will probably find some that have outgrown this original skin. They live 4 or 5 weeks once coming out of the ground. They can usually be heard near dusk.

yes I hear them all night long but I didn't realize they are that big.

This isn't a great shot as I was in a hurry to get to another site and just quickly snapped this. I heard something large fly by, but when they landed in front of me, I did stop and shoot.
