The shots were from a practice round for the Bridgestone Invitational going on right now. Sadly I was only able to make it to the first practice round so I didn't get a chance to see Phil or Tiger. But, if you enjoy golf, a practice round can be a much more interesting chance to see these guys than tournament days. Mostly because there are nowhere near the crowds. And you get to watch them practice out of the traps or pitching etc. Really is interesting to see. I've gone on tournament days and practice days and I honestly prefer the practice days. Plus, I'm allowed to shoot on practice days.

I think practice days are also more relaxed making for better pix thumb.gif

So what lens or lenses did you use to capture these great shots? And how far away were you as to not disturb them during their swing?

I'm heading to a tournament soon for the practice rounds and will rent a lens for a few days and am in the planning process of what to bring and/or what lenses I may need to rent from our friends at borrowlenses.com.

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

    I used the sigma 120-300 2.8 on a 1dmkIII.

Even though it's a practice round I still follow the rule for shooting golf:
Never fire until after they strike the ball.

For chips and such it's easy to still get the ball in the frame. For drives, I wait until they've completed their follow-thru. Most will pause nicely at the end of their swing giving you a great opportunity.

In general, shots during competition away from green are often taken with 500mm-600mm lenses so as not to disturb the golfers.

I wouldn't recommend going outfitted with anything less than 300mm. The greens are big and roped off so you need some good reach and having 300-400mm allows for nice tight shots after a hit.

    Have fun!

    Thanks John...excellent feedback!!

I can't wait to get out there...this will be the Presidents cup at Harding Park in SF October 6-11. Hopefully we'll get a bit of an Indian Summer and the fog will push back, let the sun shine through for some excellent shot opportunities!!

    Cheers,
    John
