I've recently been accepted into the "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" volunteer photographer program. Still waiting to get my training packet...anyone have experience with this organization.. I can imagine it tugs on the heart strings more than anything.

I looked into it early on as I began my photography pathway. However after learning more about my demographic, I decided against it. Folks here still struggle with the idea of Hospice for a 90-some year old that is comatose. Being an active registered nurse, I still think the program and I would be a good fit. I'd be interested to know how that works out for you.

I admire you for doing this. I looked into it a few months ago, but I'm just too emotional to handle it, even as an observer and documenter.

A photographer whose work I follow got accepted not too long ago. I'm not certain she's had an assignment yet, but you might contact her to ask about her experience: http://www.tracytesmer.com/

I have three small healthy babes so i feel really very blessed... I can't imagine losing anyone of of them. I've seen the impact this organization has made on these families... I feel lucky to have a gift that might help these families preserve what little time they had with these babies. I can see myself a tearful mess... but in the long run... what a wonderful way to give back.

I've been a member of this organization for almost 2 years, however, they have no reps in our area, and their training is often far away from where i'm at. So, i can't tell you anything about the program, i do have a booklet they sent. If they ever find a rep for my area, i'd be more then willing to get more involved.

    Good luck!

I came into this, obviously late.

But time really isn't an issue with becoming a NILMDTS photographer.

Basically, even if there is no "Area Coordinator" for your area, you can just volunteer. You can set hours, and take or not take calls as your schedule allows.

I am an area coordinator for a few local hospitals and am lucky to get called just just once every few months.

If you have any questions, I would love to chat with you regarding this.

I have recently been coorisponding frequently with my area coordinator to see what I can do to help her out more... It seems that our local hospital isn't taking NILMDTS seriously so there is the difficult task of getting our foot in the door. I feel bad for the families that are losing babies are are not even aware of the resources available to them. Its frustrating. Suggestions on how to go around the stacks of people she has been running circles with at our hospital..??

Get a Parent Coordinator. Talk to Doctors. Talk to a local support groups.

Get THEM to go to the hospital.

Also, have you been to the forum at www.nowisleep.com?

Does your hospital have a bereavement coordinator?

Hope that helps a little. I can't imagine a hospital doing this to parents. Kinda sad. :(

But good for you guys for keeping at it!

Also, the parents can ask for us. The hospital can't say no, we are their guest. So most likely if you go to local Dr's, and neonatologists you might get somewhere.
