I'm a novice here, and just curious really, as to what amounts people have uploaded, what would be your total amount of uploads? I have several thousand of photos on pbase, but they are all low resolution.

In my sports account: 27,823 images, 69GB.

Lots of photos of kid's sports teams.

Whoa! That's a lot! I'm still in megabytes rather than gigabytes on pbase, and about 6,ooo photos. I assume you have a "pro" account, so is that the same as "power", as regard permitted uploads? What size files do you normally upload?

My avg image size in that account is 2.5MB (69GB/27,823) and while there are some 6MP images, most are 12MP images (or slightly cropped versions of 12MP images). There are no quantity limits for any type of account (pro is the same as power and standard). Pro allows larger file sizes, but with 12MP images and appropriate JPEG compression that hasn't been any issue for me anyway.

I upload my full res images because that provides the best options for making prints and allows me to offer the largest web sizes (XL2) if I want. It also allows me to share full-res originals with family and friends so they can add them to their own digital albums or make their own prints (if I want to enable that on any given gallery). With unlimited storage, you can think differently than with a service that meters your storage.

Thanks for that. I'm in UK, so not sure yet what the printing setup is here, but i don't think I will be trying to print from this site. So not sure whether I shall upload large files. Would there be any objection to just storing large files here? Do people use it that way, to backup their photos?

You can certainly store files here. There are many who do that. If you make the galleries "unlisted", they won't show to the public. Smugmug even has an add-on service called SmugVault that lets you store things other than JPEGs (like RAW files or even documents). But, you don't need SmugVault to upload as many JPEGs as you want.

If you just want web viewing and have no need to ever share originals with anyone or order prints (Smugmug only prints in the U.S. now and only prices in dollars, though they can ship many places), then you can just upload images that are 1600px on the long edge and you'll have all 8 viewing sizes available on the web.

Thanks for the info, John. Re printing, here in UK I use an online printer, and provided I upload the files for print before 16.00, I get them delivered the next morning. I imagine they would take some time to arrive from the States!:D
