“Secret” information? Share it!

Photographers of all types listen up ! It is time to STOP hoarding all your “secret” information and START to share it ! I am very upset and disappointed in many photographers today because they think they are Gods gift to photography and that the technique and information they have is exclusive to them only. They think that they are the ones who invented the god dam light bulb and I am TIRED AND FED UP with that kind of thinking. There is nothing out there that hasn’t been done. The difference is how each photographer adds his or her twist on the concept. I could light the shot, shoot 10 frames, then you shoot 10 frames and our images will be totally different.
I've been seen this belief on various forums recently, even on dgrin, and how some individuals feel that they can not and will not share info and help each other learn. :dunno

Very good thoughts from fashion photographer Jason Christopher

While I will admit that there are those who exhibit this sort of attitude, I have to say that Dgrin is the most open and honest forum I have ever encountered on the internet. There are a lot of caring, dedicated professionals who take the time to comment, critique, and generally encourage the rest of us.

So, while I agree with the sentiments expressed in this quote and I think we could always do more to share information with one another, I think this may be preaching to the choir posted here.

    Just my 2 cents.

While this is true......I have see the post's basically saying I learned it you go find it and learn it...........Ino longer use PS7 I am now using PSCS4 so keep up or fall behind......
Neither of these are the way to handle soeme one wanting to learn.....yes there are a few things newer versions of software will do (converging lines can't really be done with PS7 but can with PSCS2)....but to tell someone either cought up the bucks or get out of the game is just rude and uncalled for and I have seen many a version of those 2 phrases above in various forms........but helpful people abound more than the unhelpful & rude................................................

    DId Macy tell Gimbels?

Although some things can be shared, if I had one thing or one place that made me stand out,
and maybe sought after, I think I'd keep it to myself.

I think I'd agree with that. I do lots of sound gigs; have done for years and over time have learned lots of tricks and shortcuts which not only improves the overall experience for the dancers and the bands, but allows me to do this with the minimum of fuss and time taken to set the whole thing up. I'm constantly bombarded with questions of how and why, and more often than not from folk who are in the same business as (i.e. in direct competition with) the guy who's paying for my time; in other words poachers. I just refer them to him, after all he's paying me, and as far as I'm concerned if they want my advice, they should pay me on their time not his…

I really don't have a secret but I will share this.

the meter that reads +2...V...2- is your best friend in cloudy and sunny weather situations.

I've learned that the hard way after a lot of trail and errors.

The first to do anything always struggles--it's like breaking trail. Those who follow almost always have it easier.

I do think that something that makes your business unique should to be protected. That's not to say you cannot help in other ways.

To set the stage I am not one the politically correct who thinks everything is gray where right and wrong are flexible concepts.

However when regarding the question of sharing all your secrets I believe this is a question without any intrinsic right and wrong.

Each of us will answer this question based upon who we are and our life experiences.

To play devils advocate lets say you just spent four years at Brooks institute and you are now thousands of dollars in debt with school loans. Now along comes Sammy and asks you how to do something. You may stop and think: I spent 3 semesters studying along with numerous hours in the lab learning this subject. Now he wants to me to give him on a silver platter for free the information I am paying dearly for, and he might use this info to underbid me on a job. I have kids to feed!

That said I will share one secret with you................don't tell anyone: "Be yourself".

I'm new around here but since I run a business, I have a few thoughts. If you don't feel like telling someone a secret, just don't but don't tell them you can pay for the info. I don't tell my competition friendly or otherwise how I price or how I work.

I have no experience in selling photos, shooting wedding, et al. But if you truly want to make money and grow treat it like a business and not a hobby.

If I wanted specific information from a specific someone on the forum, I might send them a polite PM with a 'may I ask....'

    Just one guys opinion

If We're on the same lines, then yes it's the same thing.

But you don't do it in a menu.

    Another Tip "not a secrete"

Remember Adam Ansel says your hand is 18% gray, this way you don't need to buy a gray card or any other funny gadget if you don't want too and save that money for a good diffuser.
