My First Macro Pictures - Grasshopper

I'm not really a bug person, but recently, my two foster daughters realized there are grass hoppers in our yard and are excited. Of course, I've been dying to try out my new 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens on my 50D. This is the picture I got, followed by the processed picture I ran through Light room.

Personally, I'm happy with the picture considering it's my first real macro shot. But I ran into a few issues getting this picture, mostly having to do with keeping the kids and grass hopper still. I had the lens wide open (f2.8) which is what I'm thinking the problem is with the DOF. I also noticed AF was hunting alot, so I'm thinking I may have been too close? Or should have used a tripod? I'm also thinking next time that I'll see about stopping down to f/8 or better but am wondering if I'll need to adjust my ISO and if that will introduce a fair amount of noise in macro photos?

Didn't come out too bad :)
It is more normal in macro to use MF when shooting near 1:1 macro. and the DIF is very thin at F2.8. Depends on what you are shooting but F8-F11 will give more DOF as you suggest - If there is not enough light then a tripod or up the ISO or switch the camera to Manual and use flash (1/200th , F11, ISO 100).
