Is there a way to upload in order?

when I open the folder with all my images they appear in order in the uploader. Once they're in my gallery, however, it's a completely random, nonsensical order. What gives?

This is a common complaint that I see on the forums. What order are your files in right now? Is it something logical like alphabetical? If so, you can just sort your gallery and it will take care of it.

If you have a specific order you want the images in, then that's a tough one. Even when you upload images in a certain order one-by-one, they get to the gallery as they are processed, so they can still get out of order. The only solution is to prefix a number in front of the filenames how you want them, or just use the 'arrange gallery' function and just order them after they get uploaded.

If you can't use one of the natural sort orders in the gallery (like time taken or filename), then the only good solution I've found is to sort them how you want on your PC and then do a file rename on them to allow a filename sort to be used to preserve the order you want.

Because I like to preserve the original filename, I add a four digit number on the front of the filename (with leading zeroes) so something that was JF2_3567.JPG becomes 0093-JF2_3567.JPG (for the 93rd image in the sort). Then, I upload them to Smugmug and set the gallery to auto sort by filename. I use Adobe Lightroom for the file rename, but there are many different tools out there that can do this.

I do the same for galleries that I want to sort by rating. Since Smugmug has no ability to sort by rating, I assign filename prefixes that represent the rating value and then sort by filename.

I'll try that, thanks. I rename my images depending on the folder they go in but I put numbers at the end. I'll make sure to put them in the front this time and see how it works out.

Just make sure you pad with leading zeroes so all numbers have the same number of digits and it should sort by that fine (it's just a text sort in Smugmug, not a numeric sort - that's why you need the leading zeroes to pad each to the same length).
