#31 Idea: Too classic?

A "classic" (or cliché) picture of North Window, I know, but I haven't see any with nice clouds and a moon, so I thought I might enter it for the competition. I was attending a conference in Las Vegas and wanted to do some photography. The DGrin challenge was definitely on my mind when I decided to make the long drive to Arches NP. :D

Title: Window into the Desert's Soul.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Image has been edited as suggested...many thanks! :D

Awesome shot, Mahesh! I would darken the foreground rocks a little bit to bring out more details in them. Currently they are just a little too bright, especially on the right side.

    Again, wonderful shot! thumb.gif

add me to the list bowdown.gifbowdown.gif

The only thing I might wonder is if there's some more detail and saturation to bring out in the sky and background...?

Beautiful shot. I love that perspective..clap.gif

I think the rocks are intense enough... deal.gif But.....

I personally think the "sky" needs some midtone contrast and shadow/ highlight adjustment to recover some of the sky detail so it gives the sky a richer blue to contrast with the orange, and the richer blue will give it more depth. This should be super easy to do since you can select the sky in PP apart from the rocks easily with this shot..

Of course this is just for polish CC, it could be entered as is, and still wow the crowds...bowdown.gif

    Gorgeous Work thumb.gif

Thanks, Allen! I agree and have darkened the FG rocks a little. I think the oranges now look even richer. thumb.gif What do you think now?

Thanks, Diva! I have done as you suggested and increased the saturation and a touch of contrast in the blue of the sky. I think the image is better for it. thumb.gif How does it look to you now?

I would definitely enter it, it's a great version of a classic composition (I plan on doing my own version of the shot if I make it to Arches during my trip through Utah in a month). Anyway, I really like it. The fact that the moon is there is great too.

    Exif?
Mahesh, check your EXIF. It says you took this yesterday, at aperture 5.6 at 1/60 ISO 200 on normal program modeheadscratch.gif Is that rightheadscratch.gif When I first saw this I thought it said you took it on the 16th at ISO 100, 2sec at f/16. Maybe all the PP effected the EXIF. Just curious. In any event, great entry, and I like the work you did on it. clap.gif

I was going to ask what aperture and speed to have such a nice, wide depth of field. Can't be 5.6, can it?

    Lovely shot and beautiful location!

The rocks look a little bit bright and oversaturated to me but it might just be me ne_nau.gif

The clouds and moon really are a very nice touch.

Oh, thanks, Dan! The first set of Exif is the correct one. I was trying to make some precise dimensional cropping (printer alignment hassles) for a few pictures and pasting various images on other images...the EXIF info must of gotten transposed up that way. I wonder if it really matters in the end as the date is still within the time frame of the competition. What do you think? ne_nau.gif

Hi Greg...see my response to Dan's post. The shot was actually at f/16, ISO 100, and 2 seconds.

Thanks for the feedback! It's funny...the rocks look pretty good on my monitor. The histogram also seems to be ok. I wonder if others think it's too bright and oversaturated...let's see.

Probably not Mahesh. I was mostly curious about what settings you used to get such a good dynamic range.

Oh, I see you just posted it. Never mindrolleyes1.gif

No worries. I actually bracketed the exposures, thinking I'd have to use the over exposed image for the shadows, but the noise control on the 5D II is amazing, and all I had to do was add a little fill light to the normally exposed image and voila! :D
