Fast lenses and a good flash for your D40X. I would not rec a film SLR in that environment myself. Film faster than ISO 400 gets pretty grainy pretty fast compared to modern DLSRs.

Unless you can setup light stands, you may be limited to on camera flash if it is as dark as you say. Shoot in Manual mode on the camera ( maybe f5.6 and 1/160th ) with the flash in iTTL at ISO 200 or 400 perhaps.

If the ceiling is 12 feet or lower, and white or close, you can sometimes put a speedlite in each corner, and light a dance floor that way while shooting at a high ISO. But it is not possible if the ceiling is high or dark.
