My 18-200VR just caught the swine flu :(

My 18-200 VR lens is sick, and I think she caught the H1N1 flu. At first she was just a little stiff, mostly when moving around the 70mm area. Then she started to shudder even when I did not have the shutter pressed halfway. I was looking through the view finder and the image started to wobble as if the VR was activating like crazy with no camera motion.
Packed her up and shipped her to Nikon this morning.
Nikon D700, D300, D5000 , Nikon 85mm f/1.8, 28-300 AF-S VRII, 70-300AF-S VR, 70-200 AF-S VR f/2.8, 10.5mm Fisheye, Sigma 12-24mm, Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, 2 SB-600 Speedlights Manfrotto 190MF3 tripod & 322RC2 ball grip head. - NJ, USA

My 18-200 also went all wonky a while back. It would make a click noise as if it were going to do some VR for me, but the image through the viewfinder would only jump slightly once, and then be still. So it wasn't so much reducing vibration as skewing is to one side. Nikon fixed it right up and sent it back very quickly.

    Good luck.

That was confirmed as a lens issue? I've noticed it a couple times using my 18-200... wondered if it was normal or if I had a real issue... sounds like I need to get the lens checked out.

No I don't recall. It got to Nikon on Thursday so I am hoping to hear something early this week.

Oh yes, that was indeed an issue with the lens. It did the exact same thing on two different bodies (D70 and D200.) I tried cleaning the contacts, and it did no good, so it went to Nikon.

They have the lens and will fix it for free, but they are waiting on parts -- so I have no idea when I might see it again.

Just got my lens back, they replaced the entire VR mechanism and replaced the rubber zoom ring which was slightly loose and stretched.

It's only happened a few times with mine... and it's my only lens so not sure I want to be without it for so long. Although it could be a good excuse for an additional lens mwink.gif

I bought the lens from B&H - would they be able to take care of this or do I need to go to Nikon direct?

Most camera stores would rather a client mail the product back to the Manufacturer with a complete detail fo what is wrong. It saves time and all.
If it is wqith a time period that the retailer would just swap it out then yes take it in............

I prefer to mail all mine in...so I know when it actually arrives and I can talk directly with repair center with the hassel of a 3rd party (the retailer)................
