my preference in control panel has Xlarge checked off, not "O".

yet, in the gallery "O" comes out the default and shows up in black for the choice

The preferred viewing size is remembered in a cookie. As far as I've seen, there's no setting in the control panel for it. Just click L and that will now be your preferred viewing size. This whole notion of preferred viewing size doesn't really work very well anyway. It's much better to just use one of the dynamically sized gallery styles like Smugmug or Journal rather than hard-wiring a preferred size.

ok, I think I got it
Thanks. I think I got confused...
this has nothing to do w/what I put as largest size in my control panel setting right? If I was rendering the original 10x8" 300dpi file it would be huge on screen...

I almost always view in smugmug style or slideshow. It's only the thumbnail and traditional view that show the "O" setting.

    Tx again

Correct, this has nothing to do with the setting in the "customize gallery" screen for the largest image to display (I don't think there's a setting like this in the "control panel"). In fact, it will let you pick O even though O is not allowed to be displayed in this gallery and then it will just display the largest that is allowed.

And, as I said, you can just pick L for it and set it to something different in less time than we can explain it to each other.
