Subcategory Naming (ampersands)

Hi,

First a little background. I Use my SmugMug site mostly for personal stuff, but occasionally I'll shoot a wedding for a friend or relative. So, I have a Weddings category, inside of which I have subcategories for each couple.

Until recently (possibly the introduction of NiceNames), I was able to make my subcategory names like 'John & Jane' (note the ampersand, which I find to be nicer than 'John and Jane'). Today, I tried to make a new subcategory for a recent wedding I shot and I got the following error message:

Sorry, you can only have spaces, dashes, and alphanumeric characters in subcategory names.

The strange thing about this is that I can still put ampersands into category names and gallery names, just not subcategories. I know this was possible before because I have some existing subcategories that already have ampersands in them.

So, obviously it is possible to work around this by making my subcategory something like 'John and Jane', but I like the look of 'John & Jane' better because it is shorter and easier to pick out just the names in the title.

Since I can still put ampersands in gallery titles, I have a silly inconsistency where my site structure looks like:

Weddings > John and Jane > John & Jane's Ceremony
Weddings > John and Jane > John & Jane's Reception
etc...

Is this just a bug that will be fixed soon? I'd love to be able to put ampersands in my subcategory names again.

-Zach

What do you mean "in any of them", Andy? headscratch.gif

I can make categories and galleries with ampersands. And my existing subcategories with ampersands work fine (provided I don't try to rename them).

It seems to me like the obvious restriction would have to be on special characters in the NiceName, but why subcategories? (especially when it works in the other two cases...)

I wasn't clear, sorry. Calling in a bigger gun, standby.

Sorry, Zach we had a slight issue with restrictions on subcategory names with the NiceNames release. Some new restrictions were added to them, but some old ones that were supposed to be lifted weren't. (We forgot they were applied to SubCategory names honestly... since they were intended to protect Category names, and appear to have only been applied to subcats for consistency.) Some things that were previously possible aren't currently possible, but that should be resolved shortly.
