weekend exercise

saw this idea in a thread I follow... took 5 minutes to set up a flashlight hanging from the ceiling. A nice weekend exercise if you're looking to explore something different...

Thanks rwells and moose! I added the color with a curves layer in post.

Looks like a fun photo project. Reminds me of the "Spirograph" drawings I did as a child.

On most DSLRs (and SLRs before them) when you turn your shutter speed all the way past 30 seconds, you get to "Bulb" mode (you may need to be in Manual for that to work). In Bulb, the shutter remains open for as long as you hold the button - typically people will use a remote shutter release, so they are not pressing on the button the whole time. That's how to get long exposure time night shots - I've taken shots with the shutter open for several minutes, using a remote and Bulb mode.
