How come when I delete a picture from SmugMug, the link I provided to someone for that pciture still retains the picture?

Seems to me if I have deleted the photo, the link should no longer be any good.

Thanks,

Mike

It is cached so might have to wait for all the internet caches to clear.

I don't think that's the issue unless it is a cache on SmugMug's server, and if that is the case then SmugMug should let its users know this up front. It's been overnight already, so the SmugMug cache should have been cleared (assuming it's their cache).

I deleted the gallery with the pictures. The link is still active. I cleared the cache on my machine, the link is still active.

I ran the same test on my photobucket account, and the photobucket link dropped the picture immediately, as it should. I would expect SmugMug to do the same.

SmugMug being a paid for service, I would think they would provide at minimum the same level of service as photobucket, though I paid expecting more. Who can I talk to at SmugMug about this issue of breaking links? headscratch.gif

    Thanks,

    Mike

Done. Also, their help section should have a full explanation on deleting pictures, not just on adding pictures.

    Thanks.

I think they are supposed to be inaccessible shortly after deleting. It will be interesting to hear what they say.

SmugMug got back with me and indicated it is a cache delay. I am just not sure whose cache is being delayed. The chain of servers I go through, or their server. I sent them the link, and they report no picture comes up. I cleared my local cache and the picture still comes up.

However, when I tested the above with photobucket, the picture disappeared immediately.

I am overseas right now, and don't have access to another routing chain of servers, so I will test again when I get back to the US. Could be the cache on a routing proxy server.

    We do. http://www.smugmug.com/help/deleting-photos

It could use a bit of updating, I'll ask Schmoo to do that.

    Thanks Andy.

I am home now. The pictures have cleared, but I bet they are still in someone's cache somewhere along the chain of servers I was using overseas. This is a strange system to me, being that photobucket seems to break the links instantly. Dunno headscratch.gif
