SoCal Fires

Wildfires have been raging in Southern California for the last several days, fueled by wind, tinder-dry forest, low humidity and scorching temperatures. The mixture of cloud and smoke provided a spectacular sunset on Friday evening, but I missed the opportunity to really capture that splendor. So on Saturday, I got to my favorite hilltop and prepared for the light show. Well, the sunset came and went, but the real light show was from the raging fires.

3. Thick smoke obscures the fires

4. As evening approaches, lights in the San Gabriel Valley come on. Those fires are huge and easily visible even from 29 miles away.

5. Light wind from the south blows the billowing smoke to the northeast, leaving a clear view of the San Gabriel Valley and the fires near La Cañada Flintridge, Altadena, and Mt. Wilson.

6. Altadena fires

7. Mt. Wilson fire

8. The fires become more visible as the sky darkens.

Thanks, Nik. Living near the mountains has its pros and cons. At times like this, I sure don't mind being 20+ miles away from the mountains.
