    I guess that I was trying to capture the emotion on his face and not necessarily what his hands were doing.

    there's plenty of perceived emotion in the first three shots but his face is turned too far downward to make a point.

    In your fourth shot you've managed to capture more of his face + emotion but your crop is so tight one would not necessarily know what he's doing outside the context of this post. And, you were a tad slow on shutter speed.
