Slideshow Issues

I am hoping you can help. I have asked others on the forums to see if my issue is happening on other system and it is.

I have the slideshow script in my bio section on my homepage -- have for quite a while now -- and all of the sudden (as of yesterday) it is not loading correctly. It will stop at a random photo (not always the same one) and refuse to continue.

I have tried clearing my cache and reloading and have tried it on both my laptop and desktop. Plus other Smuggers have checked it for me. Same result.

The last time I made changes to the page was about a week ago and I must have watched it dozens of times to make sure it was working right. No problem. But, now it isn't loading right. smile_sad.gif

My thread where I was documenting this is: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=143076

My home page is at http://nkramer.smugmug.com/, to check it.

Thanks.

    Hi Nora,

I checked your slideshow code, and there were a couple of small errors that I fixed. There was also a missing ending </div> that I added for you. I watched your slideshow all the way through without any problems. Some of the slide transitions were slow, but that may have to do with our site issues right now.

Let us know if it doesn't improve in a day, or as soon as our site issues are resolved.

Thanks. It does seem to get caught up on some photos for a long time still. I just played it and it went through quite a few more photos, but then stopped on yet another one it hasn't stopped on before and wouldn't advance anymore. When it was working correctly the entire slideshow coincided with the song and when the song ended it was over. Oh well. smile_sad.gif

I will keep an eye on it for the next couple of days and see how it goes. smile_regular.gif

I seem to be having a similar problem. Mine keeps getting stuck on the same photo.

Ian, I just checked yours. Yep, it's getting stuck on picture 17 for me.

Mine gets stuck at picture 12 (although over the past several days that has varied alot). Still broke. smile_sad.gif

We're looking into this. The odd thing is, when some of us view the slideshows, they work fine. Figures, huh!

Hang tight. Don't change your settings. I've put up a flare for one of the smart guys who will look as soon as he can :)

Your slideshow appears to be getting stuck because of this URL:

    http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/494534117_Lz5L5-705x470-0.jpg

Which the smugmug servers do not appear to be able to supply and the slideshow appears to stall forever when this one image doesn't work.

The actual image is this one:

    494534117_Lz5L5-M.jpg

My guess is that you can fix your slideshow one of several ways:
    • Change the dimensions of your slideshow by one pixel each way.
    • Crop this image just slightly in Smugmug (to make Smugmug generate a new version of it)
    • Reupload this image.
It's unfortunate that the slideshow code trips up on one problem image. I've tried like heck to get them to make the slideshow solid against errors like this and they have made improvements, but apparently it still isn't fully solid.

Thanks, I will work on that. Bizarre, as that is one of the original images that has been in the slide show from the beginning, which had to be over 4 or 5 months ago, before any of this started happening. The problem is new. smile_sad.gif

I will remove it and see what happens.

So, then I went back in and reuploaded it and is still working. wings.gif

It is likely a problem in Smugmug's custom size generation. It could be a current problem in that infrastructure or a glitch that put a bad image in a cache somewhere and now that bad image is stuck there until it ages away. The way to get around the problem is to cause Smugmug to remake that image which gives it a new version number which causes the slideshow to request a new version, thus bypassing the badly cached version. To make matters more confusing, sometimes that bad cache is at Akamai (which has many different copies) so it can behave differently for different geographic locations. These cache's do usually eventually clear themselves as the cache data expires, but my suggestions were shortcuts to work around it now.

Mines working fine now after one of the smugmug support heroes found it was an image that hadn't processed correctly thumb.gif

I must say my first experience contacting support has left me very impressed with how quickly and friendly they dealt with me clap.gif

I have found this, stopping show at a photo, a few times in the past year
and in every case I regenerated new display copies of the problem photo and fixed
it. I just re-added the watermark but any other tool that regenerates display
    copies will work like rotating.
