I have a few videos that are currently in .wmv format (yeah, it sucks.. I know), that I'd like to split into 10 minute chunks so I can post on smugmug. I'm not very saavy when it comes to video, so, please.. Does anyone know a way to do it?

The biggest problem with WMV is that it usually is extremely compressed, meaning that when you decompress it for editing, and then re-compress for further distribution, the resulting quality is often visibly poor.

I will assume that you are on a Windows platform, since WMV is a Microsoft codec.

I suggest AsfBin (or AsfBinGUI) as the editor as it is designed specifically to work on WMV files. (It is fairly non-destructive.)

If you want the GUI version your best bet is at:

You will also need a WMV player to determine where you want to perform the cut, as AsfBin does not allow you to view the files contents. Windows Media Player is OK if you only need 1 second resolution.

Once you trim to the desired length and save into the new file wrappers, I suggest converting the video files to h.264 format using "Super" prior to uploading to SmugMug.

Thanks so much for the help. I think I've solved the issue, although not in the way I expected. But, thanks so much! :)

And, that program looks like it might be really useful for other issues. So, thanks on that too!
