Same Photo in two galleries

Hi, I am trying to create a Gallery of that will contain photos I select from all my other galleries. Is there any way I can have the same photo in two galleries? If not is there an easy way to copy the photo to this new gallery? I tried the "Make a Copy" menu item from the tool menu but it does not seem to do anything.

I make a copy (which puts a duplicate in the same gallery) then I use move multiple photos to move all the copies to the new gallery. I really wish this was a one step function.

Thanks, I see why it did not seem to be working. I was selecting Copy Photo from within the Favorites Gallery - which really does not seem to be a gallery at all. The duplicates were created in the galleries they belonged to.

If anyone from Smugmug is listening I would prefer not to create a physical duplicate but instead just have a virtual copy or a pointer to the original file. I really do not want to have to keep track of updating both files, I would like it to work so that when the photo is updated in either gallery, it is also updated in all other galleries it belongs to. This would save Smugmug disk space and save me time!

I thought it was just me too. I agree too.

Before this goes too far this way, I prefer the duplicates. I typically don't make updates to my photos later, I don't know why that would become a part of the regular workflow.

I want two seperate copies because I am usually moving a photo to another gallery because I want to use it in my slideshow, banner, or a content page. On all of those types I remove the watermark. I need to be able to have a watermark on one and no watermark for the others.

I think there are applications where you want a real physical copy of the photo and other applications where you would prefer just a link to an existing photo. We already have the ability to make a physical copy. It would be nice if we had the capability of getting a pointer or link to a photo too.

Yes, and this really has to change. To my knowledge the copy is indiscernible from the original. So if you've linked to the original, and you accidentally move the original instead of the copy, you break your link.

Actually, moving a photo to a different gallery doesn't break a direct link to the image at all. The direct image URL link doesn't change. If you linked to the gallery itself, well that would change because it's a different gallery.

Sorry, bad wording on my part. I meant the viewer will wind up in an unexpected gallery.

Copy & Move multiple images from one gallery to another.
Do-able in Smugmug, but not without painstakingly sloth-like attention to detail.

Case in point: My wife's 60th birthday was celebrated while on a cruise to Alaska with a large group of friends and extended family.

Not surprisingly, I have a series of galleries specific to the cruise...covering everything on the cruise from Day 1 to Day 7...celebrating my wife's birthday was just a small part of the cruise.

I also have a category of galleries on my Smugmug site just for "Birthdays". So, naturally, I want to have a "60th Birthday" gallery using the birthday-related photos taken during the cruise.

Having to select one photo at a time, copy each one separtately within the "cruise" galleries, then move multiple photos (thank goodness!...this is the only part of the process that is somewhat user-friendly) to the birthday gallery is a real chore.

I suspect it might actually be faster and easier to go back to my hard-drive and select the birthday photos from my Photoshop Elements files and upload them (a second time) into the birthday gallery. The point is (IMHO)...it "shouldn't be" faster and easier to do it that way...I should be able to do it seamlessly, quickly, easily (and in a SINGLE step) within SmugMug.

first post, but I gotta agree.

I came here expecting to find a simple answer, but alas, that isn't to be the case.

Believe me, it's a point that's been beaten into the ground here for quite some time! It's no secret that it's probably one of the biggest wishes of all feature requests. But until then, I think you're quite right-- it's sometimes easier to just upload the same image twice if you know you need it in a couple galleries. Here's the clincher though: if you've not yet keyworded & captioned it & are planning to do that in Smug, (or if you wanted to do quick edits in Smug) then copying it is faster. All this should become a moot point if/dare I say "when"! virtual galleries become a feature someday. What I do when I have lots of copying or cropping to do is have two browser windows open at once & work on a gallery starting with its last page in one window while starting with its first page in another window.... just keep going back & forth between the two & it eliminates much of the thumb-twiddling!

I try to do all my keywording and captioning on my computer because they my originals have all the right info. Because of that, I find it a whole lot easier to just reupload that to copy. I often end up with three copies of the same image for a soccer season as I want to display by game, by player and by highlight. And, since I have to use password protected galleries, I can't use any of the keyword gallery work-arounds either.
