any way we can get the limit increased from 40
so we don't have to keep selecting next page, next page, etc...
or at least have some more options 60,100,1000,all

the scroll wheel is much easier than selecting the page numbers

I would think most dgrin users are now on dsl or cable...
and the speed should be enough to load as many posts as possible...???

maybe there is another reason for limiting them to 40 per page?

Thanks,
Edward

I think this is a function limitation of the vBulletin software

I visit other sites using the same software and the limit is 40 as well.

The number of posts displayed is based on configuration settings (Maximum Displayed Posts Before Page Split and User-Settable Maximum Displayed Posts) in the ACP -> Thread Display Options.

In theory you could allow the user to select a ridiculously high number like 1000 or some such simply by adding it to the list in User-Settable Maximum Displayed Posts. It's very easy to change and give it a try. However this could have a significant performance impact if you have busy forum and a lot of large threads.

If you do change it to try it out you then need to go into your User CP -> Edit Profile and select the number in Number of Posts to Show Per Page.

I think that bit of information you copied answers the question why we, and a lot of other forums, have the limit set to 40 :D

yeah...that's why I pasted it in the thread...
in case someone else comes looking...

    but...

it probably wouldn't hurt to try it for awhile and see if there really is a performance hit...

if you noticed that post was from "2005"...

four years...I'd say dgrin's computers have been upgraded since then...
so they could probably handle the "performance hit"...
    if they even noticed it...?

    also...since it is an option...
I doubt that everyone would run and change their settings all at once.

maybe a show all button would be a better option...
instead of having a user setting set to some high number...for every thread.
have a show all link right below the page links...
if you want to continue and see the entire thread for that particular thread...
just click the link...show all...no more paging...if not...select next page...

But the software has also been upgraded and requires more cpu power for all the newer features. In the end, it's the same--no extra horsepower for anything special.
    also...since it is an option...
I doubt that everyone would run and change their settings all at once.
But this is a very good point. I doubt many people change it at all, if even to 40. A quick SQL query could tell the admins how many have set it to 40 or a number higher than default. I think it would be less than 10% of the regulars.

    Unfortunately, this isn't an option.

"User-Settable Maximum Displayed Posts - If you would like to allow the user to set their own maximum posts per thread then give the options separated by commas." I've got mine set to '5,10,20,30,40,50,100' so I allow up to 100 posts on a page. But I also have avatars turned off and graphics turned off in signatures, which affects server load.

But I still don't see but a handful of people using 100 per page. That's a lot of reading!
