A Must-Have Toy - umm, "Accessory"

While doing some birding and some action shots, I found that my 70-300 DO IS tele was not quite "tele" enough.
My 300mm is now a perfectly functioning 420mm.
I am using the Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DG TC - no functional limitations, AF is working perfectly, even in low light, with no appreciable difference in AF speed.
The Kenko 2x also works, but the AF fails in all but the brightest light
Below are some shots using the 70-300mm/Kenko 1.4x combo, at the 300mm (now 420mm) end. First two shots were apx 60ft away; last shot apx 120ft away. IS wsa turned off, pictures were taken on an old Ambico tripod. Center point AF.

Right now, I'm a very happy camper -- just got a new carbon fiber tripod, waiting for my BH3 ballhead and waiting patiently for my Sigma 10-20. Sometime, though, I know 420mm won't be enough tele either ...

hi
assuming that you are shooting digital I would have thought that the crop factor would have brought your 300mm out to approximately 420 mm equivalent or more .
another 1.4 magnification thru use of your teleconverter would bring it out to around 588 mm,which is a nice reach

Hi,
I tried a my 300 on a 20D and a 400/5.6 L on an Elan 7N - now, with the crop factor they should have been around the same - the 300 was still a bit wider than the 400. With the TC, images were about the same.
I had thought originally it was actually working like a 480 (300x1.6) but I was wrong (or I'm really far-sighted )
With the TC, I have a nice reach - like I said, a very nice toy, indeed!
