Sb-Cat names issue

Since when is "Football: 2009 Regular Season" not an acceptable name for a sub-cat? I have several like this from the past and it will not allow me to keep consistancy if the colon is no longer allowed...
Def: a character set that includes letters and digits and punctuation. Last I checked ":" was punctuation...

The error message says: "Sorry, you can only have spaces, dashes, and alphanumeric characters in subcategory names."

So you can use:

Football - 2009 Regular Season

Thanks Anthony, yes, it used to allow other characters, Sorcery had to change this, I'm very sorry.

If you want consistency, you could rename your old SubCats, that's up to you. I'm really, really sorry.

I think the error message needs to be adjusted, since the definition I found of alphanumeric includes punctuation... therefore ":" would work, but doesn't...

Tried changing the old sub cat names, I get an error since the old sub cat namse and the new sub cat name can not have the same Nice name. This makes no sense since I'm not creating a new sub cat, only renaming the old one...

then rename again to

Football - 2008 IHSA State Play-Offs

sorry the system just ignores the : I guess, and thinks they are the same.

I just went through a long email thread with smugmug support after trying to rename a sub-category that contained an existing ampersand (&). Most all of my existing sub-categories contain the ampersand but I am now told it is no longer available since the nicename can't use it. The odd thing is that a category CAN include the ampersand.

I understand url limitations, but the actual sub-category name is not the nicename and therefore should be fine as it always has been. All I can do at this point is lose the consistency in my naming conventions when trying to rename or create a new sub-category.

Your sorcerers could have grandfathered in existing categories/subcategories that had an ampersand in them. The @ in an older category name URL can be escaped as %26, just like spaces were escaped with %20. The validation code really ought to be changed to allow an existing category name to stay. It's a design mistake which can be fixed with coding to narrow the set of characters allowed and then make several features not work for customers who used those previously allowed and perfectly functional characters.
