I am very much JSO with my business, and have only been PBing for about 6 months, but this has been my favorite session thus far. I really had to take a break from posting pics in various places for CC because I was killing myself trying to fix everything. I was feeling very stifled, so I stepped away from the CC and just tried to find my style and why I was shooting...all the while, still working on the technical.
So, feel free to CC. :) I can get stats if need be.

I really love 6-9, though on 8b it would have been better had the son's hands not been so tentative. I'm curious about two of the location selections. The garage door (which isn't very clean) and the not-so-good shape receiving doors and dead-ish tree. The latter is kinda edgy, which wasn't the vibe I'd think of for family portrait. I assume the intent was for something non-traditional. What was their goal? Nice and crisp shots!

Nice series. I have to agree about the choice of some of the backgrounds. Just do nothiing to help make the photos pop IMHO.

Love the second one and the little girl checking behind her. Both the children are adorable and have great eyes. The little girl in particular has some great facial expressions that you did a good job capturing. clap.gif

I LOVE this series!!!!!!!! You did a superb job! The crisp photos just leap right through the screen. I like the laid back, rustic look of the setting. Nothing 'forced'. Looks very natural and day to day, but yet captures their family so beautifully!

Thanks so much for the input and kind words!

As far as the locations, they wanted something rather nontraditional. We just walked around in a downtown location, and they actually loved both doors. Maybe it's just a matter of opinion? Who knows, maybe I'll look back on them in 6 months and wonder what in the world I was thinking. :)

No you won't! I love the textures and materials of the doors and you do too! :) There is a lot of symmetry there too...as well as the rich earth tones. I think it was a fun and unique choice!

To me #1 should be tossed, it is not at all in the same league as the rest of the series, I was surprised how great the rest were after seeing the first one, very very nice photos.

Haha, that's funny...that one is both my fave and the family's favorite. :)

I think it lacks the neat PP that appears to be on the others, I think that is why I like the rest better than the first.

I love #2. Although you only see the little girl's face, you get a real sense of family unity here.

    Very nice clap.gif

There are some great shots here, but I keep getting drawn to #2 and #3, very nice! I agree that some of the backgrounds are a bit too busy/distracting, but it doesn't bother me hugely. Maybe on shots like #7 a little shallower DoF could have been used?

Technically everything is superb. But as for #1.... everyone in the shot looks great, but the setting makes the family look homeless!! I'd pull it offline before it shows up on one of those sites that poke fun at bad Olan Mills family photos. Not trying to make you feel bad, just trying to help and point out the other way this photo can be viewed, which I guess hadn't occurred to you...? I think you should point this out to the family and ask them to reconsider. Most of the other shots are really nice though. I love the tilted comp of the boy.

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
