As many of you know I have migrated to the Mac side of the computing world. While over all the experience has bee good I am having some difficulties.
Calling the help menu helpful is like calling the IRS a benevolent philanthropic group.
Now to the specifics....................I want to change the names of .icc profiles from the original YTFYTRUY_(*&(.icc to something more descriptive. For example Ilford Smooth Pearl_can5000.icc.
Windows has a third party software solution, and I have read that Apple's color sync utility will allow this.
While I can change the name in finder the applications still sees the original gobelty gook name.
Color Sync utility will open the .icc profile and I can find a field with the name. While I can change the name here inside the .cc profile everything outside, finder, and apps sees the original name.
This can't be all that difficult!!!
How does one do this without contacting the evil empire of the Pacific Northwest? (At least this is what the Apple instructors at the reeducation classes calls them.)

Sam, perhaps you would get better assistance if you titled your topic with a more appropriate title.
To change the internal profile name, you will need to use ColorSync Utility found in the Applications/Utilities folder. It sounds as if you have done this. If not, below is a short screencast in flash video format.
ColorSync Utility ICC Edit
My Screencast Folder
After changing the internal profile name and saving over the installed profile, and perhaps rebooting, if other apps still see the old name...then you may have to save this edited profile to the desktop, then delete the old installed profile and reinstall the newly edited profile from the desktop that has the new internal name.
Hope this helps,
Stephen Marsh

Thanks for your explanation.
I tried changing the internal name and moving it to the desktop. The external name did not change, so I renamed the external name in Finder. I then deleted the original profile and moved the new profile to the profiles folder.
When I tried to soft proof an image in CS4 I got a message that this function was not available because of incorrect name on an .icc profile.
I be stumped.
