I bought one on ebay a few months ago... great lens! there are a few listed there now. Priced not much less than brand new, the L glass really holds its value.
If the used price is not that different than the new price (about $1K), then you might consider new in order to make sure that you have a stellar copy of this lens because you will never let it go (except for the MkII version... that will also cost double). New will allow you to return for another copy OR to send to Canon for calibration under warranty. I don't know if there are "soft" copies or front/back focus copies, but something to think about.
