580EX dead if 5D not in auto mode :/

hello everyone
I'm new here so thanks for you patience

I've got 5D mark I with a brand new 580EX II ..
and after few days ... the flash works only if the camera is in AUTO mode
in Tv or Av doesn't even charge (I've checked the batteries ;-)

hmmmmmmmmm ... did I mess up some settings ?

I don't have any ideas but let's see if someone else can help.

if batteries are low . .the flashgun won't respond with any other mode except Auto :-)
