Tamron 90

I love macro and have been thinking about getting a dedicated macro lens. A friend has suggested the above reference lens.

I have a D40 and wondered if anyone could tell me if this lens will autofocus with the D40 body. I am not worried about manual focusing it myself but the camera is also used by my 16 YO son and wife. Would like to have the capability to autofocus if possible.

My budget is somewhat limited so cannot go the Nikkor route at this time.

yes tamron 90mm is very good lens, will auto focus. but most macro is shot manual for critical focus points.
sigma 105mm macro also worth considering.

I bought a Tamron 90mm macro in mid-June. It autofocuses on my Nikon D5000 which does not have an autofocus motor in the camera body. I'm in love with the lens and the camera.

I have some macro photos taken with the Tamron lens in SmugMug galleries at

The galleries mostly have the date in the gallery title. The macro pictures taken after mid-June were almost all taken with the Nikon D5000 and thee Tamron lens. Earlier pictures were taken with a Panasonic FZ50 ultra-zoom camera.

The latest version of the Tamron 90 macro, specifically the "SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di", model 272E, does have a built-in focus motor and will autofocus on all recent Nikon bodies. Older versions without this designation won't, so be careful if you are buying used.

I've been using the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro for a while now. It takes great pictures. I'm using it on Canon bodies, but it's available for Nikon mount also.

Yes, I can get macro pictures from miles away. No need to leave home.

Thanks for all the replies. Love looking at the sample pictures as well. Looks like I need to put this one on the Christmas Wish List!
