LR2 - merge to panorama in CS4 not working

Hi all,
It used to work and now i'm not sure what software update "broke" it but I can not for the life of me merge a series of photos from LR to a panorama in PS CS4 using the "edit in - merge to panorama in CS4"
Anyone got the same problem?
I'm on MacBook white with 4 GB ram, OS X 10.6.1 and latest Apple and Adobe updates.
I've tried running LR in 32bit - nope
any ideas? i've trawled the net but not found a solution that works for me yet..

edit: just selecting all and saying edit in photoshop cs4 (not as smart objects) and then selecting photomerge in PS CS4 works - but why not the automated menu option then.... hmmmm.... oh well at least i can merge again! still any tips are welcome - it's a bit of a pain this other way
