OK...this feels like a really silly question to me, but I've been bugged by it for awhile now, so I thought I'd ask the good folks here.
What is the proper way to attach my 580EXII to my light stand? If I try and slide the flash into the attachment atop the light stand, it fits, but I can't lock it like I would if it were in my camera's hot shoe. I can partially lock it, which does tighten it down, but it just feels flimsy. What am I missing here?

Elaine, if you're talking about one of these:

... you can probably take the flash cold shoe to someone and have them tighten the gap. As long as it can't slip out it's probably not a concern however.

I use two cable ties to secure my flash, after I'm done I just cut it off. I feel much safer having it secure.

add a small piece of gaffers tape to the cold shoe or a piece of card board about the thickness of a shoe or greeting card box....if that is too thick then use a piece of a business card......I have also used plastic tape---clear box tape.......none of the above will harm the contacts of your flash.......I had to do this with a stroboframe coldshoe {solid metal} as it was making total contact with all the pins of my flash and firing the flash as it was a direct short of the trigger pin....

    I like this swivel. http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,11776.html

Its a little more sleek than the standard swivel AND

    1. It is recessed in the center so the pins will not contact the metal plate
    2. It has a mechanism to tighten it to the flash
