Lens ok?

Just received a 50mm 1.4 from KEH (bargain rated, fwiw). It seems to work absolutely fine, but I noticed as soon as I picked it up that something inside it seems to move when the lens is moved. It doesn't seem to be the bezel or focusing ring, but I can't see anything external that it might be. Is this something I should be worried about and/or mean that I should send the lens back? (or call them to let them know about it?)

Thanks in advance for advice!

Are you hearing a noise or can you feel something odd?

Can you describe the thing that you are noticing in more detail?

It's kind of a small "kerchunk" inside, like something moving a tiny bit from side to side (rather than something rattling around inside it like a loose screw). Could it be a loose element? Whatever it is only has a short travel, but I can definitely feel it as well as hear it. I felt it first, in fact, as soon as I picked it up out of the box. I wonder if this could be why it was BGN grade? headscratch.gif

I don't care if whatever-it-is is merely an annoyance because the lens works absolutely fine as far as I can tell (I've now tested it out and it's even pretty sharp at 1.4, which was a pleasant surprise after all the reviews which complain about this lens wide open), but just trying to ensure there's no lurking problem that could bite me over time ....

My copy does indeed have a slight "rattle", which I can create by shaking the lens fore and aft. It sounds rather "plasticky" and I can barely feel the internal movement, but it's there.

I suspect it is from the slightly loose focus threads, required of the micro-USM motor technology. I'll try to get a video recording of the shake it takes to induce the noise as well as record the sound it makes at close proximity. Probably take about a day.

Thanks Ziggy. Like I say, it seems to work perfectly (and I sure HOPE it's keepable, because I'm loving it already!), I just don't want to wind up with a lens that bites the dust due to an internal breakage 2 days after the return period ends rolleyes1.gif

Yup, that's exactly it! I guess I'm good to go, then. Great use of technology, Zig (hmmmmm.... did you buy a new camera with video recently?! :D)

Thanks so very much for taking the time to do that - very much appreciated thumb.giflust

    ...

I was in a hurry so I just used the Fuji F40fd for that video. It translates much more quickly to the SmugMug video format than anything else I have.

I just bought a bunch more memory cards yesterday and I do hope to do some more 5D MKII video testing sometime soon, but I needed the memory for 2 shoots this weekend anyway.

I'm glad that your lens is OK.

Weird just checked mine as well out of curiousity. Does the same thing....

Weird because I have not noticed that in the year and a half I have had the lens.
