Preventing hotlinking

There are several sites which are hot linking my images directly from my smugmug site.

Is there anyway I can block them by modifying the .htaccess file like I could if I was self-hosting the images?

Ideally I'd like to white list some sites to use my images and blacklist the rest of the world.

Sorry, all or nothing - by using 'external links set to off' in gallery customizing.

If you really need a few sites to be able to do external linking, you can make a copy of the relevant images into an unlisted gallery that allows external linking while your public gallery doesn't allow it. This will keep anyone who browses your website from doing external linking. You can then set up the external links yourself from the unlisted gallery. Of course, anyone who copies those external links can link to them, but at least they can't link to the things they find on your site.
